Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay immediately was captivated with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages through the medium of art. Even though DuVernay was raised within Compton with her parents, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. As a result of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
